Lucha Underground season 2 episode 5 review - Entry of John into valhalla

Lucha Underground season 2 episode 5

10 July 2020

Background

The first season by Lucha Underground was very much entertaining to me, the stories were cheesy B-movie like, matches looked athletically impossible and the presentation looked stunning with both the production quality like that of the movies and with gorgeous women of Mexico. Robert Rodriguez's existence as a producer might well be the reason for all the above qualities, as these are the qualities that his movies tend to have and which I tend to like. Also, the show introduced me to the Mexican culture like the midget wrestling and transgender wrestling which made me perceive that the Mexican public does not prevent these group from mainstream media and the show was also high on inter-gender matches in-spite of the concept being distant from the reality, this might be because of Mexico's view on women as a strong, beautiful and independent creature.
After listening to Jim cornette three-four months till now my opinion on pro-wrestling changed for the better. I used to think that, yes wrestling is fake and you should love it for the unbelievable actions and larger than life stories but after hearing the sermons of Mr. Cornette it was clear to me that wrestling should feel real never the less and this realism should be in the action (opting for believable fights and not choreographed dances) and stories that are relatable and understandable. The realization created a detest in me for the pro-wrestling that did not stay in this Paradigm. In the case of Lucha underground, I did not retain the same hatred as I see it not as athletic endeavor rather as a film that celebrates wrestling with B movie tropes because it actually was just that, the fixed spectators, pre-taped event and narrative which viewers has no control over. I in retrospect think that I was not wrong in liking lucha underground for the reason I expressed above. And also the one-hour length makes it palatable and the cliff-hangers at the end of each episodes makes me binge the next one.
